*** VolxTheaterKarawane - Presseaussendung 7.9.2001 ***

"VolxTheateroffensive gegen Staatstheater!"
(Vorsicht Originalzitate! / Vorsicht Theater!)

= 1) »Volxtheater« Szene 1 =

Medien:
"Keine Schuldbeweise gegen VolxTheaterKarawane!"

Volxtheater:
"Was sind denn Beweise gegen Theater?"

Richter:

Vorverurteilungen, Datenweitergabe, Lauschangriffe, Verleumdungsklagen,

Doch
die "Beweise", die die italienische Justiz gegen andere Personen anwenden
will sind ebenso konstruiert.

Editorial

"If you want to put the world right, start with yourself"

Many people came to the WCAR with good intentions. For
them and for others.
Many of them showed this. The non-governmental groups
came here with very specific burning issues. With a lot of energy,
some of them succeeded to promote their ideas. Meetings, lobby,
demonstrations, negotiation, all the methods were put in practice.
Sometimes even extreme measures, like a hunger strike, today.
This shows that there is a great wish and commitment to serve the
community by all means and efforts. They started to change the
world, but there is still a long way to go.

Can we say the same thing about governments? They came here
to fight against racism to adopt a document which afterwards they
will put in practice. But do they look at the real problems from
their countries? Do they hear "the voice of the people", of their very
specific group from their countries? Do they take the time to meet them
and discuss with them?
The attitude of stepping out or of warning with stepping out when 'this'
or 'that' will not be respected, shows a weakness. Are they ready to start
changing the world themselves?

Anca Sirbu

Events of the day - NGO side

The NGO Briefing started with a long list of caucuses who either wanted
to speak on a subject or had meetings to announce. On the passes situation
no real news; people could still get a pass for today and for tomorrow, just
stand in line. We are now in the E range, and F and I will be handed out
today. Tomorrow at the last day of the conference it will be 'special
session' again but with different colours than the first day. At the end of
the meeting a few NGO delegates got up and demanded that either Mary
Robinson would accept the NGO Declaration or came to tell the NGOs
why she wouldn't. The spokesman for the U.N. NGO Liaison office
said he would bring this demand to the attention of the High Commissioner,
he also said that it would be a good idea for the ISC to talk about this in
their evaluation meeting of 6:00 pm today. At noon the ISC had a meeting
with Mrs. Robinson in which she explained again that she never refused
the Declaration but reminded the ISC of the fact that she could not support
this document because of 3 paragraphs. She promised the ISC that she
would speak to all NGOs tonight at 6 p.m. in the NGO briefing room. Later
this meeting was postponed until Friday 9.30 AM .

At 1 pm COBASE held a parallel event called 'The International Project
Racism & the West - the theory of inferiority - compensation,
responsibilities, education, science, negotiation towards an International
Convention to protect cultural diversity. The speakers were as impressive
as the title and it was an interesting and positive meeting of religious
and non-religious people with ideas to combat racism through a combination
of religion and science.

At 2 p.m. the Palestinian caucus held a press conference, basically to
state that accusations about influencing the process were not right.

Hunger strike

All day the remaining Dalit members of the Caste caucus have been on
hunger strike, sitting at the entrance to the DEC on the ICC side, demanding
that India should not do a trade-off concerning article 73 of the Governmental
Draft Declaration.

volxtheaterkarawane

12:48 wien/suedbahnhof - 13:41 nickelsdorf;
14:22 wien/west // 14:48 wien/sued - 15:41 nickelsdorf

uebernachtungsmoeglichkeit bieten wir auf bequemem strohlager, schlafsaecke
sind natuerlich mitzubringen.

WIE WEITER NACH GENUA?

Perspektiven der Anti-Globalisierungsbewegung

Diskussionsveranstaltung

#################################
# Sonntag im Vorstadtzentrum 15 #
# 15., Meiselstrasse 46/4 #
# Jeden So von 16-22 Uhr #
#################################

07 VISIONALE 7./8. September
von: Edgar Gögele <edgar.goegele@sos-mitmensch.at>
================================================
(Anm. d.

---------------------------------------------------------
Programm am Freitag, 7. September
---------------------------------------------------------
Ort: 1120 Wien, Längenfeldgasse 13-15, Festsaal und
Seminarräume
Zeit: 10:00 bis 20:00 Uhr
Erreichbarkeit: U6/U4 Station Längenfeldgasse
---------------------------------------------------------

Dieser Tag ist den "internen" Problemlagen der
Zivilgesellschaft gewidmet.
KooperationspartnerInnen etc.

Das Freitag-Programm ist auch auf www.visionale.net
einzusehen. Es gliedert sich in vier Blöcke:

10:00 bis 11:00 Uhr: Eröffnungsblock (Startflash, Begrüßung,
Eröffnung, Programmvorstellung)

11:15 bis 13:00 Uhr: Referate und Workshops I
Festsaal: Peter Weish: "Zivilgesellschaft und
Nachhaltigkeit"
Seminarraum I: The World of NGOs: Workshop - "Aspekte der
Freiwilligkeit"
Seminarraum II: Thomas Seltmann: "Reformprogramm für eine
menschlichere Marktwirtschaft"

14:00 bis 15:30 Uhr: Referate und Workshops II
Festsaal: Christoph Spehr: "Freie Kooperationen"
Seminarraum I: Ronny Wytek - Workshop "Vereinsmanagement"
Seminarraum II: Christian Schwarz - Workshop "Der Nutzen

a) Themensammlung
b) Gruppengespräche
c) Conclusio

Ideen, Anliegen, Sorgen vorzustellen.

Plenum kurz vorgestellt (Conclusio).

von Asyl in Not veranstalteten 16.

September in Wien.

abgeneigt), dessen Finanzstaatssekretaer Caio Koch-Weser

http://attac.org/cec

Soweit
Liebe Gruesze

laeuft allen empirischen Tatsachen zuwider. Wir empfehlen ihm den juengsten
Weltbankbericht "Attacking Poverty", dort findet Herr Tobin alle

einschlaegigen Statistiken.
entwicklungspolitische Take-off geschafft wurde.

Also, streiten Sie mit uns

Vorstandsmitglied der Entwicklungsorganisation WEED (World Economy,
Ecology and Development)

Regenblume

Ein Theaterstück der Interkulturellen Bühne Frankfurt/Main
Regie und Konzept: Yusuf Kilic
Mit Ute Ehrenfels

Fr. 28. Sept. 2001, 20 Uhr, Sa. 29. Sept. 2001, 20 Uhr, So. 30. Sept.
2001, 17 Uhr
Jeweils mit anschließender Diskussion
Ernst-Kirchweger-Haus, Wielandgasse 2-4
1100 Wien, U1 Keplerplatz

ReisendeR entspricht. Zusätzlich werden dadurch bestimmte Machtstrukturen verhindert.

EVENT CALENDAR REVAMPED -- AND -- MORE JOURNEY EXPERIENCE
(See below for Tom White's reflections on the Journey)

Greetings all!

Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (CUADP) volunteer Pam
Dyer <pam@cuadp.org> and Marcel, chief web designer at Computer Partners
<http://www.cuadp.org/compar.html> have gone above and beyond the call of
duty. CUADP is pleased to announce that the CUADP Calendar of Upcoming
Death Penalty Related Events <http://www.cuadp.org/upevents.html> has
undergone some substantial improvements recently. Of note:

* In addition to being able to view all events in chronological order, you
may select to view just those events for a particular state (also in
chronological order).

* Regularly scheduled meetings have been added to the list of events to
assist with planning and to provide the opportunity for folks visiting a
state on business or pleasure to meet and share with local abolitionists.
We offer thanks to those organizations that have contributed to this list
of meetings and encourage others to do so. In the interest of accuracy, we
also request that you inform us whenever possible if a meeting will not
take place. CUADP requests your input to keep this list accurate and
helpful. Contact Pam at <pam@cuadp.org>.

* Execution vigil information will also be made available whenever
possible. If there is a web site that details all the vigil
information for that state when an execution takes place, we will provide
a link. If vigils are held by a variety of groups then please send us the
individual information and we will compile a state listing and link to it.

* In the interest of unification and elimination of duplication, the CUADP
calendar page now links to the National Coalition to Abolish the Death
Penalty (NCADP) site for National, Sate and Local organizational and
individual listings.

Please keep in mind that any listing is only as good as the information
supplied. Feel free to contact <pam@cuadp.org> with ideas, concerns,

"YOU'D FEEL DIFFERENT...": Come On The Journey! -- Redux

Yesterday CUADP posted information on the upcoming North Carolina Journey
of Hope ...From Violence to Healing. We received a lot of feedback, but
the following evoked tears....

From: "Thomas White" <twhite_pr@hotmail.com>
Subject: "What the Journey Means to Me" (RE: "YOU'D FEEL DIFFERENT...")

Abe spoke of his experience with the 1993 Journey of Hope in Indiana and I
know we all hear these stories over and over, but I wanted to add that it
was one of the most profound experiences of my life. I was a 21-year old
college student just looking to spend the summer with my dad. He told me
about a group of people who were congregating in Indiana and were going to
travel around the midwest for 2 weeks in the scorching heat to protest the
death penalty and he asked me to go with him. I knew my father was
anti-death penalty because of conversations we'd had about his job at the
time as a Mitigation Investigator, and I'd even written a paper for a
college class looking at "International Views on the Abolition of the Death
Penalty"...but this whole Journey thing was a different monster for me. I
was 21 and wanted to do what "normal" college kids do on their summer
break...go to the beach, play hoops and generally just GOOF OFF. In my
mind, all I could envision were a bunch of radical hippies with picket
signs getting dragged away by the police as they protested at some prison
and that was probably LAST on my list of ways to spend my summer vacation.

I did finally agree to go to Indiana so that I could hang out with my dad,
but to tell you the truth, I wasn't looking forward to the trip. That all
changed the moment I walked into the door of the campground cafeteria where
everyone was meeting. I walked in expecting to see long-haired hippies with
tie-dyed shirts on, but instead I was met by a group of people who were
just like me. You see, I lost my mother to murder when I was 12 and until
the day I walked in that door in Indiana, the only people I knew who had
lost a loved one to murder was my own family. My father and I walked into
the cafeteria during a portion of the evening that I call "sharing and

caring".

At the end of each day of the Journey, the group would all circle up and
share what had happened during the day. Well, being the first day of the
Journey, instead of sharing what had happened during the day, each person
shared information about who he or she was and what brought them to the
Journey. To say the least, I sat there fighting every emotion possible as I
heard the horrible stories of murder and violence that had affected each
person's life. With each story I grew angrier and could not understand
myself why these people were here "protesting" the death penalty. Then my
father got up to speak...he stated that he was there for my sister and me
and for the other survivors who'd been affected by my mother's death. He
stated that he'd spent 2 years and 103 days wrongly accused and locked up
in an Alabama prison and for many of those days he dreamt of how he'd take
vengeance on the person/persons who'd done this to him and his family. But
he stated that he no longer felt that need for vengeance...he felt a need
to forgive and heal and live again. My father had seen death face-to-face
and he wanted no more blood on his hands. As my father stood there in front
of these strangers saying these things that I'd never heard or possibly had
never chosen to hear, a sense of calm came over my body and a warmth came
into my heart. For so long, I too, had been walking with a black cloud
surrounding my heart. The hatred I felt had not allowed me to heal and do
what God had meant for me to do when he put me on this earth...LIVE! I felt
that if my father, even with all the horrendous things that had happened to
him, could forgive and attempt to heal then so could I.
But it didn't stop there...a few days later I left our campsite on a
Journey of my own to either Purdue University or Indiana University. I
believe I was with Bill Lazare (sp?) and Ken. I remember sitting there
listening and looking at the reaction of each student as Bill and Ken
addressed my peers.

As the presentation drew to a close one of the students asked or rather
stated, "I doubt you'd feel that way about the death penalty if someone in
your family was murdered." I had been quiet until then but as soon as the
statement left the student's mouth I spoke up and stated that it had
happened to me and I was against the death penalty. I spoke about my
mother's death and the events surrounding it and how I'd come to my
decision on the death penalty. The class asked a few questions and with
Bill and Ken's help I answered some questions but I was still a little
unsure if I should have spoken out. As I was walking out of the classroom,
a young woman pulled me aside and as she introduced herself a tear ran down
her face. She stated that she'd lost a family member to murder and that
she'd been torn apart by where she stood both on the issue of the death
penalty and how to go on living. You see, she was like me...an outwardly
happy-go-lucky college student carrying around a black cloud inside and
struggling just to live each day. Until that day, she said she'd never met
anyone who'd had a similar experience, felt the same emotions or even

struggled to go on like she had. She handed me her email address and asked
if she could write me and then thanked me for being there. We exchanged
email messages for a while and unfortunately we lost touch during our many
moves during and after college. But during these exchanges she shared with
me that by speaking out from my heart that day, that I had really helped
her realize that it's okay to mourn, it's okay to be mad, but it's also
alright to heal and to go on living. She in turn showed me the power and
effect that the Journey has and the good that it can do.

I've had the opportunity to spend time on a couple more Journeys but it
will always be that first one that I remember most fondly, because it was
there that my life began again. It is also there that I was adopted by one
of the greatest extended families one could ever ask for. What brought us
all together was a horrible act of violence and a common cause but what
makes us all so unique is our ability to love and forgive and our
willingness to share our most painful memories in order to help others
heal. I can only hope that each time a Journey-member goes out and speaks
that they take with them the love that they shared with me that night in
Indiana. Because you not only changed a point of view on the death penalty,
you saved a life and taught me what it was like to live again.

Thank you to Ernest James Jr., Bill Pelke, Sam Reese Sheppard, Sunny
Jacobs, Marietta Jaeger, Bob Gross, SueZann Bosler, Shirley Dicks, Abe
Bonowitz, Ken, Bill Lazare, Mike Lawson, Mike Heath (and many others who
were on that 1st Journey and others who've become part of my family along
the way)...and most of all thank you to Christie White, the best little
sister a guy could have and the one who always kept me going, and George
White, who is not only my father, my confidant and my friend but also my hero.

Keep fighting the good fight and know that for every 100 people you speak
to on the Journey, you may only affect 1 person...but know, that one person
could be someone like me.

I love you all,

Tom White, Survivor

SAM REESE SHEPPARD... Sings the blues...

Many people know Sam for his courageous struggle to prove his father's
innocence. If you have been on a Journey of Hope ...From Violence to
Healing, you have heard Sam talk about his experience - having lost his
mother to murder when he was only seven years old, and having the state of
Ohio respond by saying, "YOUR DADDY DID IT!" and seeking the death
penalty. Sam grew up visiting his father in prison. Here his story in
North Carolina at the upcoming NC Journey... More on all of this is
available on Sam's web page, <http://www.samreesesheppard.org>.

But few know that Sam is an accomplished poet and musician. Sam is hard at
work recording a full album, but he's released one song on a CD so far,
entitled, "The Frame." If you have a computer with a sound card and a fast
modem, YOU can listen to it on the web page! Check out
<http://www.samreesesheppard.org/>. We'll let you know when more CD's are
available.

MORE BLUES: DEATH ROW LAWYERS GET A LIFE

I've known Dale Baich since I became a pen pal with his client, Anthony
Apanovitch, a man with a very strong case of innocence on Ohio's death
row. Dale's office, then at the Ohio Public Defender Commission, and
currently at the Federal Public Defender in Phoenix, AZ, was always a mix
of the usual piles of (legal) briefs and related matter. But there was
also an extensive and constantly growing collection of BLUES memorabilia
and albums. That's right - Dale mixes late nights and early mornings
saving lives in the courts with late nights and early mornings in the smoke
filled blues clubs of wherever the man happens to be. (I've never actually
witnessed this, but it sounds good, so it must be true....:-) ) Anyway,
Dale is co-founder of Blue Witch Records, which recently produced BIG PETE
PEARSON's new album, "One More Drink." The music is great, but what is
notable is in the liner notes: "stop the death penalty" and included in

the special thanks is a reference to "the guys on the row in Arizona and
Ohio." Another former Ohio DP lawyer moved to Arizona, Ken Murray,
co-authors one of the songs. And, I just noticed, dear friend from Amnesty
and Farm Worker days in California, RONI ZIEMBA created the cover and
inside photos. A true collaboration of abolitionists! Check it out (and
buy it!) at <http://www.bluewitchrecords.com>.

CUADP MAKES APPEARANCE IN FICTIONAL THRILLER!!!

Last week we received a phone call from George White, co-founder of
CUADP. George was reading a new Barbara Parker book he had checked out
from the library. Apparently this book, "Suspicion of Vengeance," is the
latest in a series featuring an ongoing character - a civil lawyer who gets
involved in a criminal case. In this book SHE makes a visit to the death
row prison in Florida at the time an execution is going on. According to
George, on page 332 the character is driving up to the prison and sees
protesters holding signs that say things like "Why do we kill people who
kill people to show that killing people is wrong?" and "Execution is NOT
the Solution." On page 333 she describes a "...man handing out buttons for
Citizens United Against the Death Penalty."

OK, so the name of our organization was slightly off.... Once he saw that
reference, George checked the acknowledgements and found the following
statement from the author:

"Little more than a year ago, I had never given much thought to capital
punishment. Writing this book forced me to gather the facts, to weigh
various opinions, and to acknowledge the deeply held beliefs on both sides.
I have learned that no argument can erase the pain of the survivors of
crime, and that police, prosecutors and courts do the best they can with
limited resources. Like any product of human invention, the system is
fallible. Rules of procedure do not always correct its mistakes.
Ultimately, however, this is a moral and religious issue - not a factual
one. I now find myself among those who believe that capital punishment is
primitive, arbitrary and unnecessary."

Barbara Parker called CUADP about a year ago for information and
assistance. She wanted to know what goes on at protests. She wanted to
know about the death penalty. We responded. She's now got a whole section
about the death penalty on her web page. Check out
<http://www.barbaraparker.com>, and get "Suspicion of Vengeance," available
now at your local library, or your local corporate giant book warehouse,
and maybe even at your friendly local independent book seller (go there
first!).

STEVE EARLES' "DOGHOUSE ROSES"

Tim Stanton, director of Unitarian Universalists for Alternatives to the
Death Penalty (UUADP) wrote:

"Hey, tonight at my local library I saw (and checked out) a new collection
of short stories, "Doghouse Roses" by a guy named Steve Earle. And, best
of all, he gives CUADP and the AAC a mention on the dust jacket bio! Great
job of product placement, Abe!"

Well, surprise surprise. We hadn't noticed that, so pulling the book off
the shelf, we find that the dust jacket bio reads, "[...] In the struggle

to end the death penalty, he serves as a board member of the Journey of
Hope and is affiliated with both Citizens United for Alternatives to the
Death Penalty and the Abolitionist Action Committee. [...]" This is
Steve's first book, and while "it starts slow, it gets much better in the
latter half," according to several fans who know about Steve and literature...

Steve Earle is much better known as a song writer. A lifelong
abolitionist, he wrote "Ellis Unit One," a song on the CD that accompanied
the film "Dead Man Walking," and he has several other songs with death
penalty themes. Sometimes, he talks about the issue from the stage while
he is on tour. Steve and his band have been the opening act on the Mary
Chapin Carpenter tour, so he hasn't been talking about it from the stage,
but he did invite Amnesty International to set up tables at the
shows. CUADP coordinated that effort for the four shows in Florida last
month. Thanks Steve!

At this year's Fast & Vigil, Steve played for the forth year in a row. The
show was interrupted by rain. More on that soon, but you can listen to
last year's Steve Earle concert at the U.S. Supreme Court by visiting
<http://www.abolition.org/steveearle.html>. Enjoy!

And again, THANKS STEVE!

OH - and by the way - IF YOU ARE NEAR NASHVILLE:

Mud, a succinct, two-act slice of dramatic realism by Cuban playwright
Maria Irene Fornes, marks the debut of the Broadaxe Theatre, the newest
addition to the Nashville theatre community founded by singer/songwriter
Steve Earle and actor Sara Sharpe, along with veteran theatre professionals
Jeff Atkins, Gaye Jeffers, Kay McCurdy and Ken Bernstein. The company's
inaugural production will run in a limited engagement for three weekends,
September 6 thru the 22nd at Bongo After Hours. Seating is
very limited. Tickets are $15 and are available by calling (615) 385-1188.

We include this tidbit because it features a bunch of abolitionists,
including a collaborative effort by Steve Earle and Sara Sharpe. Both are
long-time abolitionists and good friends of CUADP, but they are also A
JOURNEY COUPLE. That's right - they met on the Texas Journey in 1998. I
knew Sara was a big fan of Steve's because she had told me how disappointed
she was to miss him - he had only planned to be with the Journey for the
first three days, and she came towards the end. Knowing this, I sent Steve
to pick her up, and she would not believe it was him! He had to show her
his ID! Now they collaborate both as artists and as a family. (Could this
be another reason to come on the North Carolina Journey
<http://www.journeyofhope.org>?)

AND SPEAKING OF PLAYS

CUADP recently received the following message:

"Hello, I am the author of a play about the death penalty that was produced
in our church -- Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, last December.
I want to make the script available to other groups who are trying to
educate people about the death penalty. Is there some way I can list it as
a resource on your site? I will much appreciate your consideration, and
please contact me if you want to see a copy and learn what people have said

about it.

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the roots
Black bodies swingin' in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh
And the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is the fruit
For the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck
For the sun to rot
For the tree to drop

Here is a strange and bitter crop

besonderem Zauber.

16 Österreichs Muslime distanzieren sich neuerlich von Taliban
von: Dipl. Ing. Tarafa BAGHAJATI <baghajati@surfeu.at>
================================================

http://religion.orf.at/tv/news/ne010905_schakfeh_fr.htm

Schakfeh. Auch der Prozess gegen die
Mitarbeiter der Hilfsorganisation "Shelter Now"

wegen christlicher Missionstätigkeit lasse sich
aus dem islamischen Recht, der Scharia, nicht
begründen.

Österreichs Muslime distanzieren sich neuerlich ganz
klar vom radikal-islamischen Taliban-Regime in
Afghanistan.
1-Sendung "Religion Aktuell".

"Islam garantiert freie Religionsausübung"

Schakfeh ist auch keine Bestimmung der Scharia
bekannt, die Missionstätigkeit verbiete: "Wir sehen
keine religiöse Begründung für all das, was sie tun und
lassen."

unterschiedlichen Interpretationen

Die Scharia ist ein umfassender Rechtskodex. Sie
besteht nicht nur aus Strafbestimmungen, sondern
auch auch Reinheitsvorschrift, Familienrecht, Erbrecht
und dergleichen. Es gibt fünf Rechtsschulen, die die
Scharia unterschiedlich interpretieren - sie ist also
kein einheitliches Gesetz.

Denn

von: PWI <info@pwi.action.at>
================================================

Menschenrechtsorganisationen

18 End of armed violence in Macedonia
von: "Yolanda R." <roal@nodo50.org>

Women solidarity against war
The end of the armed violence in Macedonia
20 years of the women peace camp Greenham Common

The tenth reunion of the International Network of Women
Solidarity Against War / Network of Women in Black, which took place in
Novi Sad from 23rd to 26th of August 2001, was attended by 250 activists
from 16 countries. Among other things, the International network of
Women in Black has confirmed their decisiveness to continue
the nonviolent resistance to war, all forms of militarism,
by building the network of solidarity among women, above state,
national, ethnic and other boundaries and divisions.
It has been brought to decision on this meeting, on the initiative of
Women in black from Belgrade, that we start an International action on
September 5th this year: The end of the armed violence in Macedonia. In
dozens of towns, both in states of ex-Yugoslavia and in Europe and
outside of Europe, activists of the International network of Women in
black will make the women solidarity against war, militarism, and all
forms of ethnic homogenization visible.
Besides the protest against violence in Macedonia, on the same day we
will note the 20th anniversary of the women peace campus in Great
Britain - Greenham Common. By bounding these two occasions, Women in
black prove that they do not accept to fulfill their roles of passive
victims of military and sexist violence, but they organize public
nonviolent actions against all forms of militarization, global as well
as local.
We demand an urgent end to all armed conflicts and use of
force, as a necessary condition for establishing peace and return of the

displaced citizens. The international community is committed to prevent
the use of force and to disarm all those who do not respect the signed
peace agreement.
In this occasion, we support all the organizations from
Macedonia, no matter what their ethnic structure may be, which aim to
establish peace and resolve problems in nonviolent way. We support
organizations of Macedonian women, of Albanian women, of Turkish women,
of Serbian women, of Roma women and others who oppose all forms of
ethnic homogenization and militarism.
Women in Black from Belgrade and Creative workshop from
Kraljevo, together with the Spanish activists - participants of 10th
reunion of International network of Women in Black, will give a peace
performance "DEMILITARIZE OURSELVES, DEMILITARIZE OUR ENVIRONMENT" on
September 5th 2001 on Republic Square in Belgrade, from 15:30 to 16:30.
The peace actions will be organized on the same day in many towns in
Serbia and Montenegro.

KPÖ und GLB planen Kampagne gegen Privatisierungspolitik der Regierung

Utl.: Privatisierung öffentlichen Eigentums ist Enteignung der Bevölkerung

Wien, 07.09.

Was

sozialer Sicherheit, heißt Raub an gesellschaftlich notwendigen
Dienstleistungen und massenhafte Arbeitsplatzvernichtung. Privatisierung
Profitinteresse weniger", so Baier.

Publikumsrat ausgeschlossen.

Der Autor ist der Integrationsbeauftragte der Islamischen
Glaubensgemeinschaft in Österreich.

>>SLOVAKIA: SUPPORT S14 DAY OF ACTION TO RELEASE MARIO BANGO!
Workers Power Global, Prague

14 September: Day of International Solidarity with Mario Bango!

Racist attacks and murders are the hallmark of the discrimination and
oppression of Roma in Eastern Europe. The state authorities ignore or
minimise these attacks. The result has been waves of emigration to some
west European countries where Roma desperately hope that they can be
safe from this sort of Nazi terror.

Young Roma anti-racist activist Mario Bango was determined to stay and
fight racism and fascism in his own country - Slovakia. He and his
family were repeatedly the subject of racist abuse and physical attacks
On one occasion his brother Eduard was seriously injured after being
attacked by Nazis. He had to spend two weeks in hospital

So on Friday 10th of March when a Nazi attacked his brother on a bus
Mario defended him with his knife-which many young Roma carry because of
the liklihood of life threatening attacks and because they know they
will get no protection from the police.

The Nazi attacker was seriously injured and died in hospital 3 weeks
later. Mario did not try to escape but waited whilst the police and
ambulance was called. He was immediately arrested and charged with
"causing injury resulting in death".

The Slovak media reported the case entirely from the Nazi attacker's
side - falsely stating that Mario and his brother had been stealing from
passengers on the bus. Nationalist politicians at once sided with racist
attacker and the Slovak parliament held one minutes silence in
comemoration of "a student and model citizen".

In jail Mario suffers regular racist abuse and threats from prison
guards who are open supporters of far right parties. Only the level of
public and media attention brought about by an international campaign
restrains them from beating him up or even killing him.

We believe Mario Bango is no criminal! His "crime" was to defend his
brother from a brutal racist attack - the effects of which he knows too
well.

We call on all human rights, progressive, anti-racist organisations to
organise solidarity actions with Mario Bango on 14 September 2001
- a date which will be close to his first trial - under the slogan of
"Freedom for Mario!"

Solidarity which goes beyond words also needs money! The family of Mario
owes the lawyer 89.000 Slovak Krones which is around 30.000 Austrian
Schillings or 1.360 British pound.

Mario's family is a poor working
class family and naturally can not afford to pay such a sum. But we must
not let Mario down now! We appeal to everyone who sympathises with Mario
to send a donation to keep the legal defence of Mario running.

>>USA: STRIKERS PLAY HARDBALL AGAINST US SWEATSHOPS
Workers Power Global, Boston

Who makes your trendy American baseball cap? Exploited workers in New York,
that's who - and they've had enough.

A small town on the outskirts of Buffalo, New York has become the latest
battleground in the struggle between workers in the garment industry and
sweatshop bosses. In mid-July some 250 workers - all members of the
Communications Workers of America (CWA) - went on indefinite strike against
the New Era Cap Company of Derby, New York.

The strike came after nine months of fruitless talks between CWA officials
and New Era management, who made it plain from the outset that they did not
want to deal with a bona fide union. New Era had demanded wage cuts of 30
per cent on an average hourly rate of $12.75 (just under £8) and had
threatened to slash pay even more drastically for workers who were unable
to higher productivity targets.

The 80-year-old company, which has always been based in the Buffalo area,
mounted a bitter campaign to keep the CWA out of its Derby and Buffalo
plants. In July 1999 the US government's National Labor Relations Board
upheld a series of charges concerning the intimidation and victimisation of
union representatives at both facilities. Company bosses have also shifted
a significant share of production to a pair of non-union plants in Alabama
and extended subcontracting relationships in Malaysia and Bangladesh.

While New Era may lack the global name recognition of Nike, Adidas and the
Gap, it is no bit player in the USA's sweatshop sportswear business.
The company is a monopoly supplier of on field caps to all 30 of the Major
League Baseball clubs. In addition, new Era is one of only three authorised
manufacturers for official souvenir caps on sale across North America and
also supplies caps emblazoned with college logos to shops at 37 US campuses.

This latter factor led CWA activists to contact United Students Against
Sweatshops (USAS), which sent supporters to visit the Buffalo area plants
in January 2001. The USA team issued a damning report, "Money made, Workers
Forgotten". It argued that "The Koch family [New Era's owners] 'have chosen
to pit workers against one another across state lines and national borders
in a relentless pursuit of higher profits'.This behaviour embodies the
global race to the bottom that creates sweatshops and decimates entire
communities."

USAS, with branches on some 200 college campuses, has indicated that New
Era will almost certainly be the focus for a major campaign this autumn.

Members of the CWA local later contacted the Workers Rights Consortium
(WRC), a recently formed research body charged with monitoring conditions
in factories licensed to produce college sportswear. An investigative team
spent 125 hours probing a range of complaint lodged by union members on the
eve of the strike. To date the New Era investigation marks only the second
by the WRC. The other examined conditions at Nike's notorious Kukdong
subcontractor in Mexico. The WRC's mid-August report on the Derby plant
bolstered almost of the CWA's charges, especially around health and safety
issues:

- Between 1995 and 2000 at least 45 needle punctures occurred at the plant.
Many involved the piercing of bones and the embedding of needle fragments
in fingers. The rate of such injuries was 15 times the national average for
the garment industry over this period.

- More than a fifth of the Derby production workers have either undergone
or been referred for surgery in connection with musculo-skeletal disorders
such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. These almost invariably stem
from repetitive motions in work processes. The reported level of
potentially disabling musculo-skeletal conditions is four to five times the
industry average, based on official government statistics.

Among the victims of this sweatshop slavery was been CWA branch president
Jane Howald, who reported: "I have had carpal tunnel syndrome and surgery
for it. I've also had a ruptured disc in my back. And the company makes
light of this."
Down on the daily picket lines, the bitterness is apparent. Their anger is
directed against not only the 50 scabs but at a "family firm" that has
raked in profits exceeding $20 million a year from the plant - and a local
media that has either ignored the dispute or simply regurgitated New Era's
propaganda.

The strikers have enjoyed support - in words at least - from the Major
League [Baseball] Players' Association and received substantial donations
from other trade unions in the Buffalo area. The AFL-CIO, the American TUC,
has also given its backing to a boycott campaign against New Era products.
Many lorry drivers have refused to cross picket lines and several small
local businesses have also made donations. In spite of the local media, the
dispute has gained national prominence, with "The York Times" and "Boston
Globe" running substantial articles. All this has helped boost morale.

But strikers are also concerned that management's objective may be to close
the Derby plant and shift all production out of the area. Strikers look set
to embark on a tour of Major League stadiums in the run-up to the league
playoffs in October. But after seven weeks on strike the New Era workers
need a shot of solidarity from a local union movement that is still
relatively strong (organising up to 28 per cent of the area's overall
workforce), despite large-scale job losses and some significant defeats in
the last 20 years.

The strikers have hit production hard at the Derby plant, but they need to
stop work at the Buffalo factory, where the CWA narrowly lost a
certification election after a vicious anti-union campaign played divide
and rule between new immigrant workers from South-East Asia and longer
serving African-American workers.

>> BRITAIN: WILL TURKEYS, SORRY TORIES, VOTE FOR XMAS?
Workers Power Global, London

Turkeys do not vote for Christmas. But Tory party members are life form
less evolved than Turkeys. And so it may well be that, this month, they
will vote to keep their party out of office for at least another term and
condemn it to years of civil war, defections and even splits.

On 17July Tory MPs unexpectedly kicked front runner Michael Portillo off
the shortlist for the party leadership. Portillo was the preferred
candidate of two-thirds of the Shadow Cabinet. He was preferred because his
Thatcherite past and his quasi-liberal new image would allow him to
straddle both camps of the Tories. He also held to William Hague's
pragmatic version of Europhobia rather than Duncan-Smith's rabid
ideological version.

But the blazer-wearing masses of Britain's retirement towns were never
going to have a gay man in charge of the party of Winston Churchill. Lord
Tebbit on Duncan-Smith's behalf denounced Portillo as "not normal" and
praised the Duncan-Smith who succeeded him as MP for Chingford as a "family
man". And so it has come to pass that Tory party is now violently polarised.

The future lies in the hands of around 300,000 party members. The average
age is at least 65, but 40 per cent of them are over 65. Fewer than 5 per
cent are under 35 years of age. They hanker after the "good old daysof
Thatcherism" and its crushing defeats over the miners, dockers, printworkers.
The core of this cesspool of reaction is the 30,000 or so that can actually
do something for the Tories on the ground and they have made it absolutely
clear they want the Thatcher legacy revived in the form of Duncan-Smith.
Their credo runs like this: no to asylum seekers, yes to hanging and
caning, no to tax, welfare spending, yes to anti-union laws, no to blacks
and homosexuals. One Tory member from Somerset wrote to the media of her
shame at the fact that the word "coons" is regularly used in local Tory
meetings and that party members cheered at the death of 54 Chinese asylum
seekers in a sealed container last year.

Fascists and others on the far right quickly signed up to Duncan-Smith's
campaign team. Even though BNP leader Nick Griffin's father has been
"outed" it only served to underline the fact that most Tory party members
agree with "voluntary repatriation" of black and Asian British people - the
polite codeword in the golf clubs for ethnic cleansing.

But more than anything, as the »Economist« said: "The Tory leadership
contest is playing out, in slow motion, the party's fundamental divide over
relations with the European Union."

Most Tory MPs and the vast majority of the membership hate the idea that
they may be led by Kenneth Clarke simply because he proposes that Britain
adopts the Euro. Duncan Smith has not only ruled out joining in principle
but in 1997, in Parliament, expressed sympathy for "that growing number of
people" who "have determined that outright departure [from European Union]
is the only solution".

This stance, as well as the fact that Duncan Smith has no ministerial
experience, and has in one commentator's words "the charisma of a
speak-your-weight machine", has induced despair into the ranks of the top
layers of the British bosses. Most big businesses want to be inside
Eurozone soon for sound capitalist business reasons and the idea that
Duncan Smith could lead the main political vehicle for the bosses this
century, fill them with gloom.
But if a Duncan Smith win would lose the Tories even more friends in high
places then they would certainly lose any influence that have left over the
all those in Britain under 30 years of age - bar the 10,000 of them that
are Tory party members.

The social base of the "natural party of government" has got smaller, older
and more stupid during the last 40 years. This did not seem to matter to
them as they could rely on big business and media backing to engineer
election victories. Increasingly bereft of this wider backing, as Blair has
stolen their clothes, the social base of the party is all that it has to
start its climb back to power. And it is a total liability. They hate
recreational drugs, black culture and gays - in short all the things that
young people see as normal and to be valued.

In this climate, policy differences between Duncan Smith and Clarke are
hardly the point. Clarke is as reactionary as any Tory on education policy,
welfare, privatisation, trade unions, immigration policy. He was the
architect of some of the worst policies of Thatcherism and signed up for
the rest in a succession of Tory cabinets.

But he and his supporters know that if they want to get elected again they
have to do two things: tailor their European policy to keep the support of
mainstream big business; and alter their social policies to make them look
like a party of the 20th century at least, if not this one.

All trade union activists and socialists have watched with delight the
back-stabbing, name-calling, cesspit-stirring antics of the Tories' silly
season. Many would be delighted if the Tory rank and file push the
self-destruct button and vote for Duncan Smith as leader on the assumption
that it will make them totally unelectable.

But this too is the outcome most favoured by Blair and the Labour leaders.
They know that huge swathes of "traditional" Tory policy not yet vacated by
them and taken over by New Labour will be up for grabs. Blair could
engineer a busload of Sean Woodward type defections. Blair would have no
parliamentary constraints on him. Blair could further move Labour to the
right, hard though it is to imagine possible.
Blair's famous "project" was to get Labour in power, cast off its links to
the unions, and form a coalition of the political centre linked to Euro
entry, the atomisation of working class communities and the adoption of US
style welfare policies - and kept in power by proportional representation.
The landslide of 1997 got in the way of that.

But a Duncan Smith victory will revive the possibility in a different form.
A cold split of the Tory "left"; an ad-hoc coalition around the Euro-entry
referendum; electoral oblivion for the official wing of the Tory party. Of
course the price of the project will be paid by the working class - which
will see the possibility of exerting pressure on Labour through the unions
become even more remote.

>>BRITAIN: UNIONS MUST UP THE FIGHT AGAINST PRIVATISATION
Workers Power Global, London

Will it end with a bang or a whimper? In the run up to this month's meeting
of the Trades Union Congress in Brighton the union bosses are squaring up
for a fight with Blair over privatisation.

John Monks, the TUC general secretary shocked the press, in August when he
declared that New Labour was facing "the shortest honeymoon on record". He
went on to warn of a "very difficult relationship" between Labour and the
unions in the near future, if Labour continues with its privatisation mania.

The TUC Congress begins on 10 September. Many of the motions tabled
condemn Blair's infatuation with the private sector and call for an end to
PFI and PPP projects. A motion agreed by 19 unions, and expected to get
overwhelming support at the Congress calls for mass protests against
privatisation. The motion, proposed by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU),
states that:

"We fundamentally believe that public services should be publicly owned and
staffed by public servants" and that "Congress does not believe that the
expansion and improvement of public services can be achieved through an
increased role for the private sector in the provision of core public
services, and rejects the notion that efficient public services can only be
provided entirely by, or in partnership with, the private sector."

The motions will be debated on the day after Blair addresses the Congress.
He is likely to reiterate his belief that the government has a mandate to
privatise and that the only difficulty is how they "present" this policy.

So are the union leaders on a collision course with New Labour? At union
conferences before and after the election union funding of the Labour Party
has been challenged. Union donations are expected to fall from 70% of the
Labour Party's election budget in 1992 to 35%. The GMB are cutting their
donations by £1 million over the next four years.

But while some union leaders are personally opposed in principle to
privatisation, most of them take a more "pragmatic" approach. Privatisation
is decimating union membership - in two ways. Some transfers to the private
sector are putting workers on the frontline of a battle with union busting
multinationals that they are just not prepared for at branch level.

A more insidious factor is that, with workforces being sold off to
companies that are then taken over and broken up, the central offices can
simply lose touch with hundreds of former members.
So the union leaders will be keen to find a compromise with New Labour
which protects their organisation and subs, while allowing the government'
new friends in business make a good profit. Even the motion promising mass
protests emphasises pressure on the government over action.

It states that the TUC will "campaign and mobilise support for this policy
(against privatisation), press on the government the need to think again
and, if necessary, support the calling of a national demonstration in
support of public services."

Hardly an inspiring call to action! What we need instead is a fight to
stop privatisation dead in its tracks. We don't want union leaders just to
fight the effects of privatisation on the workforce: they should be
fighting privatisation in principle. That, of course means a political
fight - and inevitably puts on the agenda a socialist political alternative
to New Labour that the Socialist Alliance is fighting for. And it means
actively gearing up the unions at branch level to block privatisation - not
chasing the fantasy of unions as "service" organisations that many
delegates at this month's Congress are terminally addicted to.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

>>WTO: BUILD FOR MASS ACTION ON 9 NOVEMBER
Workers Power Global, London

The world's leaders are about to find that there is no hiding place from
the anti-capitalist movement. In an attempt to avoid "summit-hopping"
protesters they have shortened the World Bank/IMF meeting at the end of
September to just two days - and they've moved the World Trade Organisation
meeting on 9 November to Qatar.

But US activists are still determined to surround the White House on
Saturday 29 September, while there will be a mass union-backed march the
day after.

And while it will be virtually possible to take the protest to Qatar, the
call for simultaneous mass action has been given a tremendous boost by the
International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, the Geneva based
mainstream union alliance, for a "Global Unions Day of Action by the
Workplaces of the World" on N9.
"The purpose of the Day of Action is to mark the unwillingness of trade
unions to accept the negative effects that globalisation is imposing on
workers around the world, and draw attention to the serious deficiencies in
the world trading system at the present time," said Bill Jordan, General
Secretary of the ICFTU.

Jordan is the former back-stabbing leader of the UK's engineering union and
was on the right wing of both the Labour Party and the TUC in the 1980s.
But the ICFTU's call can and must become the focus of our attempts to
clinch the alliance between the anti-capitalist activists and the unions.

The ICFTU is calling on the WTO for "- rotections of basic workers' rights
from the exploitation that results from world trade; reforming the world
trading system to benefit the poor in developing countries; the right to
quality universal public education and health services, free from WTO
rules; cheap and affordable medicines to fight diseases like HIV/AIDS; and
opening up the WTO system to consultation with trade unions and other
democratic representatives of civil society".

In short, like most union leaderships, it wants to reform capitalism and
its institutions. But because the world's bosses are trampling over union
rights and ignoring the leaders' reform calls, they need mass action to get
a place at the table.

Jordan has called for action "ranging from stoppages and demonstrations to
workplace discussions, public meetings and high-profile media activities".
Let's be clear: 9 November needs to become a worldwide day of strike action
and protest.

The next step in Britain is to build a big demo outside Labour Party
Conference on Sunday 30 September. But after that we should keep going the
committees formed to mobilise for the Labour Party Conference demo (see
below) and focus now on a massive anti-globalisation drive in the
workplaces, schools and colleges.

The ICFTU represents more than 156 million workers 148 countries and
territories. That power could stop globalisation in its tracks. Let's
mobilise it from below!
